Out of 50 UK protein bars we audited, 33 carry at least one flagged ingredient, and 32 of them end up Mushbooh or Haram. The most common offender is not what most people expect: it is “natural flavourings”, which appear on 33 bars and go unconfirmed on 31 of them — the carrier solvent can be alcohol-based and almost nobody declares it. Next is E471 (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids), on 18 bars with no source declaration. Gelatin (E441) appears outright in 2. Carmine (E120) turns up in none of the 50 — a genuinely good result for this category, and worth saying out loud.
The short answer: most mainstream UK protein bars sold in supermarkets, gyms, and Holland & Barrett are mushbooh or worse. A handful of whole-food and plant-based options clear the bar cleanly. How we reached this verdict
We reviewed ingredient lists from each brand’s UK packaging (cross-referenced with the manufacturer’s website where available, as of June 2026). We flagged ingredients under four criteria:
- Gelatin (E441) — almost always porcine in UK products unless explicitly stated otherwise. Automatically Haram unless the manufacturer confirms bovine halal-slaughtered source.
- Carmine (E120) — red colouring derived from cochineal insects. Classified Haram under the Hanafi school; Haram under most Shafi’i and Maliki positions too.
- E471 (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids) — can be plant-derived (soy, sunflower) or animal-derived (pork lard, tallow). Without a confirmed source, it is Mushbooh. We contacted each manufacturer that uses E471 and noted the responses.
- Natural flavourings — the catch-all term can include alcohol-based carrier solvents. Where a bar otherwise looked clean but listed “natural flavourings” with no further detail and the manufacturer did not respond, we rated it Mushbooh rather than Halal.
We also checked for glycerol (E422) source (plant vs animal) and E475 (polyglycerol esters). Where a bar is vegan-certified, we treat these as plant-derived and do not flag them unless another issue exists.
Certification bodies we recognise:
- HMC (Halal Monitoring Committee) — considered rigorous by most UK Muslim communities
- HFA (Halal Food Authority) — widely accepted
- Vegan Society / Vegan certification — not a halal certificate, but rules out animal-derived E-codes

Top findings
The most common haram ingredient: E471 with no source
E471 appeared in 18 of the 50 bars we checked, and on every one of those the source was left undeclared — we received confirmed plant-source responses from zero manufacturers. It is the second most frequent concern here, behind unconfirmed natural flavourings (33 bars). This is not unusual. E471 is cheap, abundant, and used as an emulsifier and texture agent in the chocolate-flavoured coatings of most high-protein layered bars.
The specific problem for Muslim consumers: E471 derived from pork fat (lard) is functionally identical to E471 derived from soy lecithin or palm oil. The label gives no indication. Under the Hanafi mainstream position, an ingredient with undisclosed animal source is mushbooh — permissible only with verified plant origin.
Worst offenders — multiple concerns in a single bar
PhD Smart Bar (Millionaire Shortbread) is the only bar in our audit with confirmed gelatin alongside unconfirmed E471 and unconfirmed natural flavourings. It is rated Haram.
MuscleFood Lean Bar (Chocolate Mint) lists gelatin with no species declaration. Given the product’s non-halal positioning and no certification, this is treated as porcine by default — rated Haram.
Grenade Carb Killa uses E471 across all flavours and lists natural flavourings that Grenade have not publicly clarified. Three flavours were audited; all are Mushbooh. Grenade has never held HMC or HFA certification and declined to respond to our ingredient source enquiry.
Barebells uses E471 in its chocolate coating and natural flavourings throughout. The Swedish brand is positioned as a premium indulgent bar, but all three UK flavours tested are Mushbooh.
MyProtein Layered Bar carries E471 in every flavour variant we reviewed. MyProtein (owned by THG Nutrition) has not published halal certification for this product range.
Surprise safe picks
Rxbar (Chocolate Sea Salt and Blueberry) turned out clean — minimal processed ingredients, no E471, no gelatin, and straightforward natural flavouring (dates, nuts, egg whites). Two of three flavours tested are Halal.
Trek Protein Flapjack (Dark Chocolate) also cleared all flags with a short, plant-based ingredient list. Its sibling flavour (Original) lists natural flavourings with no confirmation — downgraded to Mushbooh — but the Dark Chocolate variant is one of the few gym-facing bars that’s genuinely clean.
KIND Bar (Caramel Almond Sea Salt) is clean, and KIND’s UK team confirmed to us that their natural flavouring carrier solvent is not alcohol-based. The Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate flavour received the same confirmation. Both are rated Halal.
The mushbooh grey zone
Twenty-two bars in our audit sit in mushbooh status primarily because of undisclosed natural flavourings. That count now includes Pulsin’s three plant bars — rated Halal when this audit first ran, but a July 2026 re-check for our picks guide found an undeclared natural flavouring on current labels, so those rows stand at Mushbooh until Pulsin discloses the carrier. This is a grey zone for a reason: under standard food labelling law, manufacturers are not required to declare the carrier solvent used in flavour preparations. Alcohol (typically ethanol from grain fermentation) is the most common carrier solvent in the industry. Some manufacturers use glycerine or other non-alcohol alternatives.
We contacted every manufacturer with a natural flavourings query. Responses received:
- KIND — confirmed non-alcohol solvent ✓
- All others — either no response, or a generic “our products comply with UK food law” reply that did not address the solvent question
When manufacturers decline to confirm, the product stays mushbooh. This is not a verdict of haram — it is an honest acknowledgement of insufficient information. Some Muslim scholars apply the principle of istihalah (complete transformation) and rule that alcohol in trace flavouring quantities is permissible if it loses its intoxicating nature; others do not. We note the position but leave the final call to the consumer and their scholar.
Safe picks by goal

Highest protein, clean ingredient profile
- Rxbar Chocolate Sea Salt — 12g protein per bar, egg white based, no E471, no gelatin. Halal.
- Trek Protein Flapjack Dark Chocolate — 10g protein, oat-based, plant ingredients. Halal.
Low sugar
- Nakd Cocoa Orange — 3.8g sugar, dates and nuts only. Halal.
- KIND Caramel Almond Sea Salt — 5g sugar, confirmed flavouring solvent. Halal.
