Is Ferrero Halal?
⚠️ MushboohFerrero Group products — including Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, Kinder Bueno, and Tic Tac — are not halal-certified in the UK or EU. The primary concern is E471 (mono & diglycerides of fatty acids) in Ferrero Rocher, Kinder, and some Nutella batches, and E476 in Ferrero Rocher specifically. Sources are undisclosed. Raffaello (coconut) contains no gelatine or E120, but shares the uncertified status. Halal-certified variants of some Ferrero products are available in select markets.

Halal Certification
No halal certification in the UK or EU. Some Ferrero products in Middle Eastern and South-East Asian markets are produced under regional halal certification.
Is Ferrero Halal?
Ferrero Group — the Italian confectionery company behind Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, Kinder (Bueno, Surprise, Joy), Raffaello, Tic Tac, and Mon Chéri — holds no halal certification in the UK or EU for any of its standard product lines.
There are no overtly haram ingredients (pork, alcohol, gelatin) in most Ferrero products. The concern centres on E471 (mono & diglycerides of fatty acids) and E476 (PGPR), whose animal or plant origin Ferrero does not publicly disclose for UK/EU manufacturing.
Nutella: The Most Searched Question
Nutella’s ingredient list contains two emulsifiers that require checking:
- E322 (soya lecithin) — Ferrero explicitly states this is soya-derived. Soya lecithin is plant-based and halal.
- E471 (mono & diglycerides of fatty acids) — Source not confirmed. Can be plant or animal-derived.
Ferrero’s official position (as of 2024) states that Nutella does not contain ingredients of animal origin other than milk and hazelnuts, and that emulsifiers are vegetable-based. However, this is a brand statement, not an independently audited halal certification. Many halal certifiers require independent verification rather than relying on manufacturer claims alone.
Practical position: Nutella is widely considered Mushbooh among strict halal observers due to the absence of independent certification, despite the brand’s vegetable-origin claims for E471.
Ferrero Rocher
Ferrero Rocher — the gold-wrapped hazelnut chocolate praline — contains both E471 and E476.
| E-code | Name | Common source | UK status |
|---|---|---|---|
| E471 | Mono & diglycerides of fatty acids | Plant or animal fat | Undisclosed — Mushbooh |
| E476 | Polyglycerol polyricinoleate | Typically castor oil (plant) | Undisclosed — Mushbooh |
| E322 | Soya lecithin | Soya beans — plant | Halal when soya-derived |
E476 is used to adjust the viscosity of the chocolate coating. It is most commonly manufactured from castor bean oil (fully plant-based), but without certification this cannot be independently verified for UK production.
Kinder Products (Bueno, Surprise, Joy)
Kinder products share Ferrero Group manufacturing and the same absence of UK halal certification.
Kinder Bueno contains E471. Kinder Surprise contains milk chocolate (E471 possible) and the toy inside the egg, not an ingredient concern. Kinder Joy contains wafer and cream layers, with E471 and milk-derived fats.
The key differentiator for Kinder: products contain no gelatine and no E120 — but the uncertified E471 remains the Mushbooh concern.
Raffaello
Raffaello (coconut and almond pralines) has a simpler ingredient profile:
- Coconut flake, almond, sugar, vegetable fat, whey powder, skimmed milk powder
- No gelatine
- No E120
- No E476 or E471 in many formulations — check the specific label
Raffaello is considered by many as the Ferrero product with the fewest Mushbooh concerns. It contains no obvious haram ingredients, though “vegetable fat” should be verified by label. Still not halal-certified in the UK.
Tic Tac
Tic Tac mints are generally considered lower risk:
- No gelatine, no E120 in most flavours
- Small amount of carnauba wax (plant-based) as glazing agent
- Not halal-certified, but ingredient profile is relatively clean
Red/orange flavoured Tic Tac: Check for E120. Some variants in certain markets have used carmine-based colouring — verify the current UK label.
Mon Chéri
Mon Chéri chocolates contain Maraschino cherry liqueur in the filling. This makes them clearly haram for Muslims due to the alcohol content. Do not consume Mon Chéri.
Ferrero in Muslim-Majority Markets
Ferrero produces halal-certified variants for markets including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Malaysia. These are manufactured under local halal authority supervision. As with other global confectionery brands:
- Regional halal certification does not transfer to UK-purchased products
- UK-imported Ferrero products carry no such certification
- Always check the specific pack in hand
What to Check on the Label
- Look for a halal certification logo — currently absent from all standard UK Ferrero products
- Check for E471 — key Mushbooh concern across Ferrero Rocher, Kinder, and Nutella
- Check for alcohol in fillings — critical for Mon Chéri and any liqueur-filled variants
- Check for E120 in brightly coloured varieties
- “Soya lecithin” (E322) where specified = generally halal
Summary
| Product | Key concern | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Nutella | E471 (source unconfirmed) | Mushbooh |
| Ferrero Rocher | E471, E476 (source unconfirmed) | Mushbooh |
| Kinder Bueno | E471 (source unconfirmed) | Mushbooh |
| Kinder Surprise / Joy | E471 (source unconfirmed) | Mushbooh |
| Raffaello | Vegetable fat (check label) | Mushbooh — lower risk |
| Tic Tac | Generally clean — verify colourings | Mushbooh — lower risk |
| Mon Chéri | Contains alcohol | Haram |
| UK halal certification | None | — |
Ferrero’s products are not openly haram, but the absence of independent halal certification and the presence of undisclosed E471 means Muslims following strict halal guidelines should treat the standard UK/EU range as Mushbooh.
