Morse Road and Northland: the grocery spine
Northland absorbed much of the city’s Somali settlement, and Morse Road is its shopping spine:
- Saraga International Grocery (1265 Morse Rd, with branches on Hamilton Rd and Cleveland Ave) — the international supermarket whose own site describes its butcher counter as 100% halal: goat, lamb and poultry cut in-house. No certifier is named; as a self-statement it is the clearest one in the city’s grocery scene, printed where the business can be held to it.
- The Somali markets — Maka Market and Halal Meats on Morse Road, Sahara Halal Market & Deli on Cleveland Avenue, and their many siblings. Community-trusted counters, no registry entries; the same evidence tier as most of Somali Minneapolis.
- Kroger, Morse Road — the mainstream store shoppers most often name for a halal section. Store-level stock is not published; the reliable route is kroger.com’s listed halal brands — Crescent Foods and Midamar — covered in our Kroger halal guide.
WeGotMeat: the farm-to-counter anchor
WeGotMeat gives Columbus an unusual farm-to-counter halal meat option:
- Standard: hand-slaughtered zabiha by Muslim butchers, HMS certification stated — HMS is the Shariah Board of America’s hand-slaughter-only certifier. The claim sits on WeGotMeat’s own site; HMS’s Ohio registry pages could not be read in full, so we record it as stated rather than registry-confirmed.
- Provenance: its own pasture-raised cattle and poultry at the Coshocton farm — “Ohio’s first halal pasture-raised poultry”, per the brand.
- Price: ground beef about $8.99/lb, goat mince about $9.99 — the lowest hand-cut prices we found nationally.
- Reach: the Dublin shop, Columbus-area delivery, and frozen shipping to the rest of the country.
For households prioritising hand slaughter and traceable sourcing, it is the clearest local option we found. Ask for the current HMS certificate when you order rather than relying on an older certification claim.
Eating out: Somali kitchens and campus halal
- Hoyo’s Kitchen (North Market downtown; Dublin) — the Somali restaurant the local press sends everyone to. Halal by community standing; its own site makes no halal statement and names no certifier, so we label it exactly that. Many Somali-owned kitchens are community-trusted as halal, but the paper trail is thinner than the reputation.
- Shah’s Halal Food (2653 N High St, by the OSU campus) — the New York-born halal cart chain’s Columbus outpost; halal is the brand’s premise and its site carries a certifications page, though no Columbus-specific certificate is shown.

- Lavash Café (Clintonville) and the Cleveland Avenue Somali restaurants — community-reported halal; ask at the counter.
No Columbus restaurant appeared on a certifier registry we could read. HFSAA runs a Columbus chapter (and a Cleveland one), so certified options exist locally — its establishment list is script-rendered and would not load for us; the chapter itself is the right place to ask.
