Fresh halal chicken: Crescent Foods

Crescent Foods is the anchor of Meijer’s halal offer. The brand’s own certification page states its poultry is hand-slaughtered by Muslims, facing the Qiblah, under the supervision of a body it names the Shar’i Zabihah Committee (checked 30 August 2026).

Two honest notes on that certification:

• Hand slaughter is the standard all four Sunni schools accept without dispute — on the slaughter method, Crescent is on the strict side of US retail poultry.
• Crescent’s plants hold a listing on the HMS registry (Halal Monitoring Services, the Chicago hand-slaughter-only certifier), and the committee’s published contact matches HMS — so the audit behind the brand traces to a body with a public registry. Crescent is not on HFSAA’s products list.

What to look for: Crescent’s tray packs in the fresh poultry case — whole birds, boneless skinless breasts, thin-sliced breasts, tenders, thighs and drumsticks. The halal mark is printed on the pack.

Frederik’s by Meijer lamb and veal: a lead worth checking

This is the under-reported angle. Meijer.com listings for several Frederik’s by Meijer products — ground veal, lamb shanks, lamb loin chops — describe them as halal certified (seen 30 August 2026).

What the listings do not say is who certified them, and we could not open the product pages directly to read the full description. So our position is precise:

• Listed as halal certified on meijer.com — a real, repeated claim on Meijer’s own site.
• Certifier unnamed, on-pack labelling unconfirmed — so this is not yet a verdict.

If you shop at Meijer, pick up the pack and check two things: a printed halal mark, and a named certification body. If the pack names one, that is a significantly better lamb option than unlabelled supermarket lamb. If it only says “halal” with no body named, treat it the way we treat any uncertified halal claim: ask Meijer’s customer care who certifies it.

Frozen aisle: Saffron Road

Saffron Road frozen entrées are listed on meijer.com — the Butter Chicken among them. Saffron Road states all its products are certified halal by IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America), and IFANCA’s own site confirms the relationship. This is the clearest named-certifier option covered here: the brand and certifier both describe the relationship.

Note that IFANCA-certified poultry is not necessarily hand-slaughtered — if hand zabiha is your standard, Crescent’s fresh chicken is the stricter pick and the frozen entrées are the convenience option.

The rest of the store

The same label rules apply at Meijer as at any US supermarket:

• Meijer own-brand pantry staples — plain rice, beans, pasta and oils are generally low-risk by ingredients, but check flavoured or processed versions separately.
• Cheese — Meijer and Frederik’s cheeses need the standard rennet check; look for “microbial enzymes” or a vegetarian note. Our rennet guide covers it.
• Gummies and marshmallows — check the gelatine source; many use pork gelatine unless a halal or vegan mark indicates otherwise. See E441.
• Bakery — check for mono- and diglycerides (E471) with no source declared.

The four Sunni madhabs agree on the core rule applied here: meat is halal when slaughtered by a Muslim with the tasmiyah.
