Start on Devon Avenue for HMS-certified butchers and Pakistani restaurants, or head to Bridgeview for Arab groceries and Pete’s dedicated halal meat counter. Across the Chicago metro, HMS listed 214 certified restaurants, grocers and meat markets when this guide was researched — the highest count in its city directory.

Devon Avenue: the certified mile
The West Ridge stretch of Devon Avenue — Little India and Little Pakistan — is the shopping street, and unusually for a US halal corridor, its butchers are on a registry. These selected certified shops from HMS’s retail list (checked 30 August 2026) are all within eight blocks:

Farm City Meat (2255 W Devon), one of the street’s best-known names, is the counter-example: widely trusted, but we found no certifier registry entry — its halal status rests on its own word. Not a red flag; a different evidence level.
For eating on Devon: Sabri Nihari (2502 W Devon) — the strip’s flagship Pakistani restaurant for some 25 years — shows as HMS CERTIFIED on the registry’s own detail page, and Shawarma & Grill On Devon is HMS-listed too. Ghareeb Nawaz, the beloved budget institution, is community-reported halal; we could not verify a registry entry.
Bridgeview and the southwest suburbs
The 87th Street and Harlem Avenue area of Bridgeview anchors Chicago’s Arab-American community, and it holds two instructive stories:
- Pete’s Fresh Market, Bridgeview — a mainstream supermarket with a dedicated halal meat department, announced on Pete’s own channels, plus Pete’s-branded halal deli lines. The strongest supermarket halal counter we could verify in the metro.
- Al Bawadi Grill — the famous Palestinian grill’s HMS page showed REVOKED when we checked, citing machine-slaughtered chicken and non-certified meat. It remains a beloved restaurant, and diners who accept machine slaughter may still be comfortable — but its certification is gone, and most roundups have not caught up.
Further out in the same belt, Fattoush in Worth held HFSAA certification from 2018 until July 2026, then chose not to renew; its food is now self-stated 100% halal. Certification churns — which is exactly why this guide checks live registry records rather than relying on older snapshots.
The certified restaurant map beyond Devon

In Naperville, Sara’s Grill states HFSAA certification on its own site (HFSAA’s directory could not be read in full to confirm).

Why Chicago is like this: the certifiers live here
Chicago is the capital of American halal certification. HMS has monitored hand-slaughtered zabiha end-to-end from Chicago since 2005, and publishes per-business status pages — including suspensions and revocations, which is what a real audit trail looks like. IFANCA, founded 1982 and based in Park Ridge, certifies packaged foods and supplements worldwide (the Saffron Road certifier). HFSAA runs an active Chicago chapter. And Crescent Foods — the halal chicken brand in Midwest supermarkets — was founded here in 1996, with its plants listed on the HMS registry.

- Names we could support only from community directories (Ghareeb Nawaz’s certification, Farm City Meat’s status) are labelled exactly that way.
Community halal-status sites are not cited as evidence here. They do not audit supply chains and we do not treat them as authoritative.
Madhab note
HMS and HFSAA both hold the Hanafi/Deobandi line: hand slaughter by a Muslim with tasmiyah on every animal, no machine slaughter. That is why an HMS revocation over machine-slaughtered chicken matters to some readers and not others — some Shafi’i-leaning and AMJA opinions accept mechanical slaughter with a Muslim reciting and supervising.
