HQC’s public client register lists Bahlsen GmbH & Co. KG with certified production at Barsinghausen (the family company’s home plant near Hanover), Berlin and Skawina in Poland. Those are the sites behind the products readers search for: Pick Up!, Leibniz Butterkeks and Choco Leibniz.
Someone searched this site for “pick up” and found nothing. Pick Up! — the chocolate slab between two biscuits — is the Bahlsen product on most UK, Dutch and Gulf shelves, and it is a clean one.

No E471, no E476, no gelatine, no alcohol, no shellac. The reason Bahlsen’s biscuits clear the bar on ingredients alone is the fat choice: clarified butter and palm oil where cheaper brands use undisclosed mono- and diglycerides. Pick Up! Choco (dark), Pick Up! Minis and the Leibniz range are built the same way. The product is also marked suitable for vegetarians and kosher-certified, which corroborates the absence of animal fat.
What the Certification Covers — and the Caveat
HQC’s register is site-level: it names Bahlsen’s certified production locations, not each SKU. In practice, the core ranges (Pick Up!, Leibniz, Choco Leibniz) come from those sites and Gulf-market packs print the HQC mark. Two situations call for a second look:
- Seasonal and special editions — Bahlsen’s winter lines (Lebkuchen, some Contessa and Deloba variants) can list liqueur or wine flavourings. A liqueur in the ingredient list overrides the site certificate for that product.
- Product made at a site not on the register — Bahlsen also produces at Varel in Germany. If a pack lists a different site and carries no HQC mark, treat it on its ingredients (which will usually still be clean) rather than as certified.
