Is Knorr Halal? Bouillon Cubes, Stock Pots and E-Codes Checked (2026)

6 min read

Knorr is one of the world’s most widely used cooking brands — owned by Unilever and sold in over 80 countries. Its chicken bouillon cubes, stock pots, and seasoning sachets are pantry staples in millions of households. For Muslim consumers, the halal status of Knorr is a genuine question: the brand uses a cluster of flavour enhancers that are consistently flagged as Mushbooh.

The Three E-Codes That Matter in Knorr

E621 — Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

E621 is MSG, the best-known umami flavour enhancer. It is synthetically produced via bacterial fermentation and is considered halal by the majority of Islamic scholars and certification bodies worldwide. MUI (Indonesia), JAKIM (Malaysia), and most Gulf certification bodies classify E621 as halal.

Status: Halal (synthetically produced)

E627 — Disodium Guanylate

E627 is a flavour enhancer used alongside E621 to intensify savoury flavour. It can be produced from:

  • Yeast extract (halal)
  • Fish (halal if from permissible species, no haram processing)
  • Meat (halal only from zabiha-slaughtered animals)

Standard UK Knorr packaging does not disclose the source. Without this disclosure and without halal certification, E627 is Mushbooh.

E631 — Disodium Inosinate

E631 is the more problematic of the pair. It is most commonly derived from pork or non-zabiha meat in conventional European food manufacturing, though yeast and fish-derived versions exist. Without certification, E631 defaults to Mushbooh — and in conventional manufacturing contexts, it carries a higher risk profile than E627.

Status: Mushbooh (frequently animal-derived)

Knorr is a Unilever brand, and Unilever holds halal certification in markets where it is commercially necessary (Malaysia, Indonesia, Gulf). In the UK and EU, no such certification is in place for the Knorr range.

What About Knorr Vegetarian / Vegan Products?

Knorr produces a vegetarian and vegan bouillon range. These products:

  • Do not contain animal-derived meat extracts
  • Still contain E621 (halal), but may still contain E627 and E631

Important: E627 and E631 can be derived from yeast in vegan formulations. If a product is certified vegan, E631 and E627 inside it must be from non-animal sources — meaning a vegan Knorr product has a cleaner E-code profile than a standard one. However, vegan certification is not the same as halal certification.

Check the specific product’s vegan label: if it is both certified vegan and shows no haram concerns in the remaining ingredients, it is a lower-risk option than standard Knorr — though still not formally halal-certified.

Practical Shopping Advice

In the UK: Treat standard Knorr bouillon cubes as Mushbooh due to E627 and E631 with undisclosed sources. Look for certified halal alternatives such as:

  • Maggi (check for halal logo on individual packs — Maggi Malaysia is JAKIM-certified, UK products are not)
  • Marigold Swiss vegetable bouillon (vegetarian, plant-based, lower risk profile)
  • Halal-certified brands available at Asian grocery stores

In Malaysia / Indonesia: Knorr is JAKIM/MUI certified — use freely.
