Halal Certification
UCC RTD coffee sold in Malaysia and some SE Asian markets is JAKIM certified. Standard Japanese market products have no halal certification but contain no animal derivatives.
Is UCC Coffee Halal?
UCC Ueshima Coffee Co. is a Japanese coffee brand founded in 1933, and one of the pioneers of ready-to-drink (RTD) canned coffee. UCC claims to have introduced the world’s first canned coffee with milk in 1969 — making it a landmark brand in coffee history. Today UCC operates globally, with a particularly strong presence in Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and other parts of Southeast Asia.
The halal status of UCC Coffee is generally positive, but varies by market and product:
- UCC RTD canned coffee (Malaysian/SE Asian market): JAKIM-certified halal. These products are produced or packed under formal halal controls and carry the JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia) logo.
- Standard Japanese market UCC products: No formal halal certification, but the ingredient profile of plain RTD coffee — coffee extract, milk/creamer, sugar — contains no animal derivatives beyond dairy. Halal in formulation.
- Ground and instant coffee: Black coffee, ground roasted coffee, or instant coffee with no additives are halal without any qualification.
UCC Coffee Ingredients — What’s in the Can?
The classic UCC RTD canned coffee (Coffee Black, Coffee with Milk) contains:
- Coffee extract / brewed coffee
- Water
- Milk or creamer (dairy)
- Sugar
- Caramel colour (E150)
No animal derivatives beyond dairy are present. Dairy milk is halal. E150 (caramel colour) used in some coffee products is halal — it is produced from sugar.
There are no E-codes of concern in standard UCC Coffee products. No gelatine, no E471, no E120.

Plain ground coffee and black instant coffee are inherently halal. Coffee is a plant product — the roasted and ground seeds of the Coffea plant. No additives, no animal derivatives, no alcohol in plain coffee.
The JAKIM Halal Certification Significance
For Muslim consumers purchasing UCC Coffee products in Malaysia, Singapore, or from importers who specifically source the SE Asian product variants, the JAKIM halal certification provides the strongest possible assurance. JAKIM (Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development) is one of the world’s most respected halal certification bodies, and JAKIM-certified products are accepted across all four Sunni madhabs.
If you are in the UK and find UCC Coffee sold in a Japanese or Asian grocery that imports from Malaysia, the JAKIM-certified variant may be available. Check the label for the JAKIM logo.
Plain Coffee — A Note for All Muslims
Many Muslim consumers are uncertain about coffee. The ruling is clear and unanimous across all four Sunni madhabs: plain coffee is halal. Coffee is not intoxicating, is not classified as khamr, and has no haram ingredients. The Prophet’s companions had access to and consumed naturally caffeinated beverages without objection.
The only scenario where coffee becomes a concern is if it is mixed with alcohol (such as Irish coffee or certain coffee liqueurs) — none of which apply to UCC’s product range.

How we reached this verdict
- JAKIM (Malaysia): UCC Coffee RTD products for the Malaysian market are listed as JAKIM-certified. Verified via JAKIM’s online halal product database.
- UCC ingredient review: Standard RTD coffee ingredients — coffee, milk, sugar — contain no animal derivatives beyond halal dairy.
- Islamic ruling on coffee: All four madhabs confirm coffee (plain) is halal. No scholarly dissent on this point.
- E150 (caramel colour): Halal — produced from sugars, not animal products.
Madhab note
- Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali: All four schools agree that plain coffee is halal. Dairy milk is halal. UCC Coffee in standard formulation presents no halal concern.
- For JAKIM-certified UCC products: Accepted as halal by all four schools, including the strictest HMC-equivalent Hanbali position.
- For Japanese market uncertified products: Halal in formulation — no haram ingredients. Accepted under all four madhabs on the basis of clean ingredient composition.
