The one rule that sorts every shelf
- Uncertified bovine collagen is not verified halal. If the slaughter source cannot be confirmed, grass-fed, organic or kosher claims do not establish halal status. Mufti Taqi Usmani’s published fatwa rejects the “hydrolysis transforms it” argument.

Walmart: the certified brands are on the website, not the shelf
Walmart’s online marketplace carries several halal-certified or certification-stated collagen options:

These products ship through marketplace sellers; we did not find them in Walmart’s physical supplement aisles. The shelf products we reviewed were Vital Proteins, NeoCell and Equate bovine collagen without named halal certification, so their halal sourcing was not verified.
Target: no certified option — go marine
Target’s website has a halal filter for groceries, but it returned no collagen when reviewed. Target does stock Vital Proteins Marine Collagen in stores and online. The product is sold as snapper-scale collagen peptides from fish, making it halal by source; confirm the word Marine and the fish-derived ingredient list on the actual tub.
Do not grab the blue tub next to it. Standard Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides is bovine hide, uncertified — our collagen guide rates it Mushbooh, and its Middle East site’s unnamed “halal certified” version does not change the US product.
CVS: skip the collagen aisle
CVS Health’s own-brand Collagen Peptide Powder is bovine with no halal certification, so its halal sourcing is not verified. We could not confirm that CVS stocks a marine alternative, so CVS shoppers may need to buy elsewhere.
Costco: two tubs, opposite verdicts
Costco lists the following products online, with warehouse availability varying by location:
- Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides 1.5 lb (bovine) — Mushbooh. The big-value tub, but no audit behind the cattle.
- Vital Proteins Marine Collagen 14.5 oz — halal by source (fish scale). The tub to put in the trolley.
- Orgain Collagen + Probiotics (bovine) — uncertified, Mushbooh.

Whole Foods: marine again
No halal-certified collagen brand — but Whole Foods stocks Vital Proteins Marine Collagen, and its listing is where we read the single-ingredient confirmation (snapper scale collagen peptides, wild-caught Alaska whitefish). If your nearest options are Whole Foods and Target, marine is your in-store answer at both.

Madhab note
All four Sunni madhabs accept fish without ritual slaughter, which is why single-ingredient marine collagen is halal by source across schools. For bovine collagen the mainstream position across madhabs — following Mufti Taqi Usmani’s fatwa — is that hide from a non-zabiha animal remains impermissible after hydrolysis. The Hanafi school’s allowance for dry bones would only matter for a product stating bone-derived collagen, which none of the shelf brands here does.
