How local listings are verified
Every listing on our city guides states exactly what the evidence supports — nothing more. This page explains the status scale, how evidence is weighed, and what each badge does and doesn't imply.
The status scale
Strongest evidence first. A weaker status is never a negative verdict — it describes the evidence we could find, not the business.
A current halal certification was evidenced via the certifier’s own registry or a dated certificate published by the business.
Does not imply every product or service beyond the stated scope is covered.
The business itself publicly states it is halal (website, menu or official account). No independent certification was found.
Does not imply independent verification — the claim is the business’s own.
Only the specific items, product lines or branches named in the scope are covered by the evidence.
Does not imply the full menu or range is halal — check the stated scope.
Evidence exists but is incomplete, outdated or contradictory. We could not classify it more strongly.
Does not imply the business is not halal — it means the available evidence is not conclusive.
We could not locate adequate public evidence either way at the last check.
This is not a negative verdict. It means we could not find evidence — ask the business directly.
How we weigh evidence
Strongest first: a certifier's own registry (e.g. an HMC or HFA listing) → direct confirmation from the business → the business's own website or menu → official social accounts. Delivery-platform labels alone are never treated as evidence of halal status.
Every listing records the exact source consulted, the wording found there, and the date it was checked. Certification and suppliers change — each listing card shows its own last-checked date, and listings are re-reviewed on a schedule.
Availability labels on product picks follow the same honesty rule: Confirmed stockist — A current retailer page confirms this exact product is stocked. · Relevant retailers — Typically found at the kind of local retailer linked — availability not individually confirmed. · Available online — Orderable online for UK delivery.
Common certifier shorthand: HMC — Halal Monitoring Committee · HFA — Halal Food Authority
Independence
Inclusion in a guide is free and cannot be bought. Sponsorship or affiliation can never alter a status, its evidence, or whether a business is included. Product picks are editorially chosen and never affect a business listing's status.
Limitations & corrections
Between checks, a listing can go out of date. A status here is research, not a religious ruling — when it matters, verify with the business or certifier directly.
