Is Hellmann’s Halal?
Hellmann’s is Unilever’s flagship mayonnaise brand, widely used across the UK. The classic Real Mayonnaise formulation uses egg yolk, rapeseed oil, spirit vinegar, and salt — a short, transparent ingredient list with no animal fat or haram additives.
Eggs are halal. Rapeseed oil is halal. Spirit vinegar, under the mainstream Sunni Hanafi ruling of istihāla (transformation), is halal. The emulsifier function in Hellmann’s is performed by the egg yolk itself (a natural emulsifier), so no additional emulsifiers such as E471 or E472 are needed.
Hellmann’s Light Mayonnaise uses a slightly longer ingredient list including E415 (xanthan gum) and E160a (beta-carotene) for colour — both plant-derived and halal. E385 (calcium disodium EDTA) is a synthetic chelating agent used as a preservative — halal.
Hellmann’s Vegan Mayonnaise uses aquafaba (chickpea water) instead of egg, is fully plant-based, and is halal.
The only note for the standard mayonnaise is that eggs used in UK food production are not “halal-certified eggs” — but eggs require no slaughter, and under all four Sunni madhabs, eggs are permissible without certification.
