Is Fanta Halal?
Fanta is a brand of fruit-flavoured carbonated soft drinks produced by The Coca-Cola Company. Available in dozens of flavours — Orange, Grape, Strawberry, Lemon, Fruit Twist, and many limited editions — Fanta is sold in over 180 countries. For halal consumers, Fanta is one of the most straightforward assessments: the product contains no animal derivatives.
Standard Fanta Orange contains: carbonated water, sugar, citric acid (E330), fruit from concentrate (orange juice), sweeteners (if zero sugar variant), natural flavourings, preservative E211 (sodium benzoate), and colouring E160a (carotenes/beta-carotene) or E110 (sunset yellow). None of these are animal-derived.
E-Code Review
E330 (citric acid) — produced by fermentation of plant sugars. Halal.
E211 (sodium benzoate) — synthetic preservative. Halal.
E160a (beta-carotene) — plant-derived orange colouring (from carrots or synthetic). Halal.
E110 (sunset yellow) — synthetic azo dye. Halal (synthetic, no animal source).
E150d (caramel colour) — some Fanta variants use caramel colouring. E150d (ammonia-sulfite process) is accepted as halal.
Fanta does not contain E120 (carmine), E441 (gelatine), E471, or any other animal-derived ingredient in the standard range.
Fanta Zero and Diet Variants
Fanta Zero variants use acesulfame K and aspartame as sweeteners — both synthetic and halal. The rest of the formula is unchanged. These variants are also halal by ingredients.
Fanta Limited Editions
Occasionally Coca-Cola releases limited-edition Fanta flavours. While the standard formula is halal, it is worth checking limited edition ingredients for any novel colourings or flavourings, particularly any red/pink variants that could theoretically include E120.
