Is ESN Halal?
ℹ️ Varies by ProductESN's production process is not halal certified, but 30 products in its range hold halal certification by variety: selected Designer Whey Protein and Designer Protein Bar flavours, Ultrapure Creatine, the Perfect Base, Carb Loader, Pre and Rec range, and the Vitamin Complex Stack. Everything else is uncertified. Collagen Peptides is beef-derived with no halal-slaughter statement and no certificate — Mushbooh at best.

Halal Certification
Partial. ESN states its production process is not halal certified but that 30 products are halal certified by variety (help centre, updated 23 March 2026); the certifier is not named on its public pages. Collagen Peptides, Isoclear, UC-II and the capsule range are not on the certified list.

Is ESN Halal?
ESN says two things about itself in consecutive sentences: its production process is not halal certified, and 30 of its products are. Both are true, and the gap between them is the verdict. ESN is Varies. A product on ESN’s halal overview, in the listed variety, is certified. A product that is not on it is uncertified, and for anything made from animal tissue that matters a great deal.
ESN (Elite Sports Nutrients) is the German sports-nutrition brand behind Designer Whey and Isoclear, owned by Fitmart GmbH & Co. KG. Its help-centre article “Halal certification of ESN products”, updated 23 March 2026, describes a halal management team that runs risk assessments and audits, and supplier management that ensures only halal-certified raw materials go into the certified products. The certifying body is not named in the article text; ESN says the certificate is available in the help centre.
Which ESN Products Are Halal?
ESN’s halal product overview, shows the certified products in four groups and states on every group that certification refers to the listed varieties, not the product as a whole.
| Group | Certified | Not on the list |
|---|---|---|
| Proteins | Designer Whey Protein, selected flavours only | Isoclear whey isolate, Fruity Whey Isolate, Designer Protein Extra Creamy, Flexpresso, vegan proteins |
| Vitamins and minerals | Vitamin Complex Stack | Omega-3 capsules, Vitamin D3/K2, Vitamin C, magnesium, melatonin, curcumin |
| Performance | Ultrapure Creatine Powder, Perfect Base, Perfect Carb Loader, Perfect Pre, Perfect Rec | Creatine gummies, Crank Pump, EAA, aminos, Hydroload |
| Food and snacks | Designer Protein Bar, selected flavours only | GOAT Bar, rice pudding, pancakes |
| Collagen | — | Collagen Peptides (beef), UC-II (chicken) |
Designer Whey has nineteen flavours and only some are certified; the same applies to the bars. The overview page shows the certified flavour on each product card, so the check is the flavour, not the product name.
Collagen Peptides
This is the product where the gap matters most. ESN’s help-centre article on collagen origin states that Collagen Peptides is beef-derived, the 45 g and 60 g bars use beef collagen, UC-II is chicken, and ESN does not use pork. The product page confirms the powder is not vegan because it contains collagen hydrolysate from beef, built on the branded Gelita peptides FORTIGEL, TENDOFORTE and VERISOL.
No pork is the floor, not the verdict. Bovine collagen is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered the halal way, and ESN publishes no statement on that for its collagen supplier. Collagen Peptides does not appear on the halal overview. ESN Collagen Peptides is Mushbooh at best, and under the stricter reading not halal, until it joins the certified list or ESN discloses a halal-slaughter source. The Designer Protein Bar shows what resolution looks like: its beef collagen has been traced by a certifier for the listed flavours.
Key E-Codes in ESN Products
| E-code | Name | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| E471 | Mono- and diglycerides | Mushbooh | Used as an emulsifier in some creamer-style powders and bars; source not declared on uncertified products |
| E422 | Glycerol | Mushbooh | Humectant in protein bars; source not declared on uncertified flavours |
| E441 | Gelatine | Mushbooh | Capsule shells in the uncertified capsule range; source not declared |
Certified products have had these traced by the certifier. The table describes the uncertified remainder.
Certification & What to Look For
- Open ESN’s halal product overview for the country store you buy from; the lists differ slightly between regional sites.
- Match the exact flavour or variety. A certified Designer Whey flavour does not certify its neighbour.
- If listed, it is certified. The certifier’s name is on the certificate ESN links from its help centre, not on the overview page.
- If not listed, read the ingredients for collagen, gelatine, glycerol, E471 and unspecified flavourings and apply the table above. Creatine monohydrate is synthetic and halal in formulation whether listed or not.
- Date the check. ESN says more products are being added; a product uncertified today may be certified next quarter.

How we reached this verdict
We checked the following Tier-1 sources before publishing this verdict:
- ESN help centre, “Halal certification of ESN products” (updated 23 March 2026): “Our production process is not halal certified”; “we have added 30 products to our range that are all halal certified”; halal management team and supplier management measures. Certifier not named in the text.
- ESN halal product overview (esn.com/en/pages/halal-product-overview): certified products by group as tabled above; statement that certification refers to the listed varieties, not the product as a whole.
- ESN help centre, “Where does the collagen in our products come from?”: Collagen Peptides beef; 45 g and 60 g bars beef; UC-II chicken; no pork used.
- ESN product page, Collagen Peptides 300 g: not vegan, contains collagen hydrolysate from beef; FORTIGEL, TENDOFORTE, VERISOL with vitamin C, zinc and copper.
- Halal certification bodies (HMC, HFA, JAKIM, MUI): no ESN entry in the UK or Malaysian registers; ESN’s certification is from a European body it has not named on the public page.
- Sunni fatwa scholarship on bovine collagen, gelatine, whey and emulsifiers, summarised below.
Madhab note
- Bovine collagen or gelatine from an animal not slaughtered the halal way — impermissible under the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali mainstream (Darul Iftaa Birmingham, AskImam, Saudi Permanent Committee). A Shafi’i minority view accepts it as transformed; it is not the applied ruling in the UK or Europe and we do not rely on it.
- Whey from animal-rennet cheese and undisclosed-source emulsifiers — Mushbooh pending disclosure under every school; resolved by manufacturer disclosure for the Hanafi, Maliki and Shafi’i mainstream and by certification for the HMC-strict and Hanbali-leaning view.
- Gelatine capsule shells — as for gelatine above; plant-based HPMC shells raise no question.
- Creatine monohydrate — synthetic; no school raises a question.
If your madhab differs on a specific ruling, the relevant section above flags the school-specific position. For binding rulings on borderline products, consult a competent scholar in your tradition.

Kirkland Signature
ℹ VariesKirkland Signature has no blanket halal certification in the US. The verdict depends entirely on the product: multivitamin gummies (US) contain porcine gelatin and are haram; granola bars use unverified glycerin and natural flavour and are mushbooh; chewy protein bars (peanut butter) carry no gelatin and use vegetable glycerin — rated halal-suitable by IlmHub. Plain nuts, oils, and pantry staples are halal by ingredient.
