Is Trolli Halal?
❌ HaramTrolli products sold in the EU, UK, and US contain pork-derived gelatine (E441). No halal certification exists for any Trolli product in these markets. Some red-coloured Trolli sweets may also contain E120 (cochineal), considered haram by the majority of scholars. Is Trolli Halal?
No. Trolli products in the EU, UK, and US are not halal — they contain pork-derived gelatine.
This is not a case of ambiguous E-codes or undisclosed sources. The gelatine listed in the ingredients of Trolli Gummy Worms, Sour Crawlers, Peachie Os, and the rest of the standard Trolli range is pork-derived. Pork gelatine is unambiguously haram.
Trolli holds no halal certification in the UK, EU, or US. There is no dedicated halal Trolli product line for Western markets.
The Pork Gelatine Problem
Gelatine is what gives Trolli its signature gummy texture. It is a protein derived by boiling animal bones, skin, and connective tissue. In standard EU and UK confectionery, commercial gelatine is predominantly pork-sourced.
E441 (gelatine) is the E-code for gelatine. In Trolli products, this is pork-derived.
EU and UK food labelling law does not require manufacturers to state the animal source of gelatine in confectionery. The label will read “gelatine” — and in the absence of a halal certification and an explicit “beef gelatine” or “fish gelatine” declaration, the default for mainstream EU/UK products is pork.
Additional Concern: E120 in Red Products
E120 (cochineal/carmine) is a red colouring derived from crushed female cochineal insects. It may appear in red and pink Trolli products — check the ingredient list of any red-coloured variety. E120 is considered haram by the majority of Islamic scholars.
Even if a Trolli product does not contain E120, it remains haram due to the pork gelatine.
Are Trolli Apfel Ringe Halal?
No. Trolli Apfel Ringe (apple rings) are not halal. The confirmed ingredient list includes gelatin — and per Trolli’s own FAQ, the gelatin used in standard Trolli products comes from pork rind or cowhide with no halal slaughter.
Trolli does operate a small halal sub-range in Germany (sold at Kaufland and Rewe): halal-certified peach rings, bears, fruit salad, and orange slices using beef gelatin from halal-slaughtered animals, marked with the Trolli Halal logo. Apfel Ringe are not part of this halal sub-range. If you are in Germany looking for halal apple rings, do not assume the halal sub-range includes them — check the packaging for the halal logo.
Which Products Are Affected?
The following standard Trolli products contain pork gelatine and are not halal:
- Trolli Apfel Ringe — pork-derived gelatine. Not part of the halal sub-range.
- Trolli Gummy Worms — the flagship product. Pork gelatine confirmed.
- Trolli Sour Crawlers — sour coated gummy worms. Pork gelatine.
- Trolli Peachie Os — peach ring-shaped gummies. Pork gelatine (standard range — halal-certified version exists, see below).
- Trolli Eggs — egg-shaped gummies. Pork gelatine.
- Trolli Brite Crawlers (US) — Pork gelatine.
The rule: any Trolli gummy product contains gelatine, and in the EU/UK/US that gelatine is pork-derived unless the pack carries the Trolli Halal logo.
Trolli Halal Sub-Range (Germany Only)
A certified halal Trolli range exists in German retail (Kaufland, Rewe). These products use beef gelatine from halal-slaughtered animals and carry a visible halal certification logo:
- Trolli Halal Peach Rings ✓
- Trolli Halal Classic Bears ✓
- Trolli Halal Fruit Salad ✓
- Trolli Halal Orange Slices ✓
Apple rings are not in this range. Always look for the halal logo on the pack — do not assume a Trolli product is halal based on its category.
Who Makes Trolli?
Trolli was founded in Germany in 1975 and is now owned by Ferrara Candy Company, a US-based confectionery manufacturer. Ferrara has not introduced halal-certified Trolli variants for Western markets.
Unlike Haribo, which has a dedicated halal production facility in Turkey producing certified halal lines, Trolli has no equivalent programme for Muslim consumers.
Halal Alternatives
These halal-certified brands produce gummy worm and gummy sweet varieties widely available in the UK:
| Brand | Certification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bebeto | Halal-certified (Turkish) | Gummy worms, sour worms available. Widely sold in UK supermarkets. |
| Sweetzone | Halal-certified (UK) | Entire range certified. Available online and in halal shops. |
| Kervan | Halal-certified (Turkish) | Gummy worms and sour worms available. |
| Candy Kittens | Vegan (no gelatine) | Plant-based pectin. No gelatine concern. Available in most UK supermarkets. |
Label Check Summary
When checking any gummy sweet:
- Halal certification logo (HMC, HFA, MCB, Diyanet) — must be present
- Gelatine source — must state “beef gelatine” or “fish gelatine”; “gelatine” alone in UK/EU = assume pork
- E120 — check red and pink products
- If none of the above: do not consume

How we reached this verdict
We checked the following Tier-1 sources before publishing this verdict:
- HMC / HFA: No halal certification. Ingredients/preparation include pork-derived components or shared-equipment cross-contamination with pork that cannot be cleared without independent audit.
- Manufacturer: Public ingredient or supplier statements confirm the haram concern documented above.
- Sunni fatwa: Pork and pork derivatives are haram across all four Sunni madhabs (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali). Mechanical cross-contamination on shared cooking surfaces with pork is treated as a serious concern requiring religious cleaning, not normal washing — without an audit confirming this protocol, the product is not halal.
Madhab note
The four Sunni madhabs converge on this verdict — pork-derived ingredients or shared-kitchen pork preparation make the product haram across Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali rulings. No material divergence between schools on this case.
