Is Starburst Halal?
ℹ️ Varies by ProductUK Starburst was reformulated by Mars Wrigley in 2020 to remove gelatin entirely — it now uses a modified-starch binder and natural colourings (paprika extract, curcumin), and the pack is labelled 'suitable for vegetarians'. UK Starburst is therefore halal under the Sunni mainstream position. US Starburst still contains pork-derived gelatin (confirmed by Mars Inc.) and is haram. Some Middle East markets carry local halal certification.

Halal Certification
UK Starburst is gelatin-free since 2020 and labelled 'suitable for vegetarians'. No formal HMC/HFA halal certification, but the reformulated ingredient list contains no animal-derived or alcohol-based components. US Starburst contains pork gelatin and is not halal. Middle East SKUs may carry local halal certification.
Is Starburst Halal?
It depends on which country’s version you buy.
- UK Starburst (post-2020 reformulation) — Halal. Mars Wrigley removed gelatin from the UK recipe in 2020, replacing it with a modified-starch binder. The synthetic dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5) were swapped for natural colourings (paprika extract, curcumin). UK packaging now carries the “suitable for vegetarians” label.
- US Starburst — Haram. Mars Inc. has confirmed via customer service that US Starburst contains pork-derived gelatin (with some lines using beef and others using pork).
- Middle East SKUs — typically halal-certified locally. Check the pack for a regional halal authority mark.
What changed in 2020
For years, UK Starburst contained gelatin and was reasonably understood to be haram (pork-derived gelatin in UK confectionery is the default unless explicitly halal-certified). In 2020, Mars Wrigley reformulated the UK range:
- Binder: gelatin → modified starch
- Red colouring: synthetic Red 40 → paprika extract
- Yellow colouring: synthetic Yellow 5 → curcumin (turmeric extract)
- Suitability label: now reads “suitable for vegetarians”
The reformulation was driven by UK consumer demand for vegetarian-friendly confectionery. The result is that the UK chew range — Original (strawberry, lemon, orange, blackcurrant), Sour, Mini Chews — no longer contains animal-derived gelatin or insect-derived carmine.
Key ingredients in current UK Starburst
| Ingredient | Source | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Modified starch | Plant (typically maize or tapioca) | Halal |
| Paprika extract | Plant | Halal |
| Curcumin (E100) | Plant (turmeric) | Halal |
| Citric acid (E330) | Synthetic / fermentation | Halal |
| Natural fruit flavourings | Fruit-derived | Halal |
There is no gelatin, no carmine, and no alcohol in the post-2020 UK formulation.
US Starburst — still haram
The US recipe was not reformulated. Mars Inc. has confirmed that US Starburst contains gelatin from a mix of sources, including pork. US Starburst remains haram for Muslim consumers and should not be substituted for the UK version when travelling.
How we reached this verdict
We checked the following Tier-1 sources before publishing this verdict:
- Manufacturer (Mars Wrigley): 2020 UK reformulation publicly confirmed via product packaging change (“suitable for vegetarians” label) and ingredient list across UK retailers (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons). Mars Inc. has separately confirmed via US customer service that US Starburst contains pork-derived gelatin.
- HMC / HFA (UK): Silent — no formal halal certification on UK Starburst even after the reformulation. Reader must rely on the ingredient list and the “suitable for vegetarians” label.
- Sunni fatwa on the vegetarian-suitable label: Darul Ifta Birmingham (Mufti Mohammed Haroon Hussain): “When it comes to something being ‘suitable for vegetarians’ that means that it does not contain any animal product therefore it is most likely halal also.” Caveat: must also verify no alcohol — UK Starburst contains no alcohol.
Madhab note
The four Sunni madhabs converge on this verdict:
- UK Starburst (post-2020 reformulation): gelatin-free, modified-starch binder, plant-derived colourings (paprika extract, curcumin), pack labelled “suitable for vegetarians,” no alcohol. Halal across all four schools under the vegetarian-suitable + no alcohol principle (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i) and clean-ingredient principle (Hanbali). No school-specific divergence in this case.
- US Starburst: pork-derived gelatin confirmed by Mars Inc. Haram across all four schools.
- Middle East SKUs: locally halal-certified. Halal across all four schools.
The 2020 UK reformulation eliminated the previous gelatin concern entirely; this is one of the cleaner cases on the site with no madhab divergence.
