Is Oatly Halal?
Oatly is a Swedish oat drink brand producing plant-based alternatives to milk, cream, and dairy products. The entire Oatly range is 100% plant-based — there are no animal derivatives of any kind.
Oatly Oat Drink (the standard oat milk) is made from water, oats, and a small amount of rapeseed oil. The enzymes used to break down the oat starch into natural sugars are microbial or plant-derived. No dairy, no animal fat, no gelatine.
Oatly Barista Edition is the same base with a slightly higher fat content from rapeseed oil for improved frothing. Fully plant-based — halal.
Oatly Oat Cream (cooking and whipping variants) uses oats and rapeseed oil — no animal derivatives.
Oatly Oat-Based Yogurt Alternative uses oats and live cultures (microbial — not dairy-derived). No gelatine, no dairy, no animal derivatives.
The thickeners used in some Oatly products — such as E412 (guar gum) — are plant-derived (from guar beans) and halal. Dipotassium phosphate E450, used as a stabiliser in some variants, is an inorganic mineral salt — halal.
Oatly products are also certified vegan by the Vegan Society in many markets, which provides absolute confirmation of no animal derivatives.
